Re: 4th of July

ToTing is still big around here, but people now gravitate to highly decorated, destination neighborhoods that promote the holiday on Facebook. Happily for me, we have one of those right around the corner, so we get some spill-over. You have to put on a show these days to get the ToTers.

Alison Krauss and T-Bone Burnett were also involved with the Cold Mountsin soundtrack, as were Sting and Jack White. I love that one, too.

Re: 4th of July

Andy, I am familiar with the Adams miniseries and think the book on which it was based is even better. It reads like a novel. In an interview, McCullough, who has written about several presidents, was asked who he thought was the best. Without hesitation, he responded, "George Washington, because he...

I cannot imagine painting over that, but people are insistent on redecorating every so often.

Re: 4th of July

I remember your enthusiasm for the Fourth! I like to watch patriotic movies, like 1776 and Sons of Liberty (tv miniseries), in the run up to the Fourth. Also I like to read pertinent literature, like the Adams/Jefferson letters, or some of the Federalist Papers, etc. And of course the Declaration. S...

Re: What made you mad today?

Oh, for sure. I think earthrise from the moon (Apollo 8?) was the moat significant photo of the 20th century.

Re: What made you mad today?

I hope you feel better soon, Nostalgiascape! Mike, PBS is having a series about Apollo 11 in early July. Check your local listings. My kids (all post college now, but all still in their 20s) certainly know who Neil Armstrong was. My eldest even shares his birthday and has been aware of that fact for...

Re: 50 YEARS AGO

The movie Apollo 13 perhaps revitalized that expression.

Re: Worst and Best Thing You Ever Got in Your Trick or Treat Bag

Mike, that story about your elderly neighbor is fabulous! I never got these, but my kids once got political literature, and another time, church literature. Both places gave out candy, too, though. I shrugged it off. In my own childhood, one couple always got a big bowl full of nickels, and each chi...

Re: 50 YEARS AGO

I was 14 that summer, and I remember it very well. My mother and I sat up long after midnight to watch Armstrong take his first step. Truthfully, I fell asleep during the wee morning hours, but Mama woke me up for it. Armstrong's first words were scripted, and everyone knew ahead of time what he was...
